Date Reviewed: 18 December 2009 | I could debate with the die-hards where this particular entry stands when compared with the rest of the celluloid franchise, but that would be just as fruitless as trying to debate religion or politics. Chances are your mind is already made up, and there's nothing I'll ever be able to say to change that. For me however, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince embodies the kind of film I've been waiting for all along. The central plot tip-toes along with caution, drawing strength from the evolving character storylines and Yates' moody stylistic design. This effectively stirs up dread and anxiety on a psychological level, and if you ask me, this is a welcome change from the CGI magic tricks that have entertained us thus far, because this actually makes Hogwarts and the rest of the wizarding world seem real for the very first time. Most of the Harry Potter films are very different from one another, so it's almost unfair to say definitively if this is the best one yet. What I will say however, is that this is the only Potter film that continued to resonate with me long after seeing it,even if it isn't 'perfect'. Despite all the changes that were made during the translation from book to film, you really need to take this film for what it is - a continuation of the film saga instead of an exact retelling of the book. If you read the book first, keep that in mind and you very well may find this to be one of the more enjoyable experiences you've had with the series yet. Furthermore, the video quality on this release is identical to what I had seen in theaters, the audio is demo worthy, and the extras are entertaining and informative. This is one of the easiest recommendations I've made in a while - highly recommended. (Read Full Review)

Date Reviewed: 16 December 2009 | While dark (too dark for younger children, in my humble opinion), the movie is also capable of great fun, and the extras are right up the (Diagon) alley of Harry's throngs of fans who have grown up right along with him. Recommended. (Read Full Review)

Date Reviewed: 16 December 2009 | Some detractors of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince lament that it feels like a prelude to the big finale rather than a film that can independently impress. I heartily disagree. This sixth installment of the franchise is more stylistically sophisticated and thematically complex than these critics acknowledge. In fact, it's hard to imagine how Deathly Hallows will top the emotional heights Half-Blood Prince reaches…but if any cast and crew can do it, this one can. (Read Full Review)

Date Reviewed: 10 December 2009 | Warner's 'Half Blood Prince' release is a no-brainer to add to your growing 'Harry Potter' movie collection, unless you're waiting for one of the other Special/Ultimate/Box Set editions. The audio is demo material and the video recreates the vision of the director and cinematographer. The special features, especially the in depth documentary on JK Rowling, are well-done. 'Half Blood Prince' comes recommended. (Read Full Review)

Date Reviewed: 9 December 2009 | The movie's only shortcoming is its extreme length, yet that may also be a strength to those viewers who value getting their money's worth, especially when it means enjoying the new high-definition picture and sound more. And there is no question the two-and-a-half hours go by quickly enough, making "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" one of the most affecting episodes in the "Potter" series. With its powerfully impassioned ending, "The Half-Blood Prince" leads Harry and his friends into the greatest adventure of them all in the final episode. So, until next time.... (Read Full Review)

Date Reviewed: 8 December 2009 | Despite its fresh take on conflict, Half-Blood Prince does not offer anything terribly memorable. Its purpose is to build, laying a foundation for The Deathly Hollows. Despite this and its own identity struggle, Half-Blood Prince admirably performs its duty, serving fans that critical character development that will be valuable in the future. (Read Full Review)
