Reviewer: Audiophile Audition | Overall | Date Reviewed: 5 April 2010 | One of the great war movies, taking a quite different tack in exploring the personalities of three different soldiers in Iraq who specialize in the de-fusing of IEDs (Read Full Review)

Reviewer: DVD Town | Overall | HD Video | HD Audio | Date Reviewed: 18 February 2010 | In my list of films for 2009, I would place "The Hurt Locker" at number four. I enjoyed it for its unique perspective and the impact it offers in its character study. It unquestionably shows us a side of the Iraq war that has never really been addressed in a movie, much less keeping American´s distant from showing us the true horrors of it on television. It is a film that is well directed and well crafted, easily one of the better films of 2009. In the perspective of films I have seen that deal with the war in Iraq, I´d say "The Hurt Locker" comes out on top. (Read Full Review)

Reviewer: High Def Disc News | Movie | HD Video | HD Audio | Date Reviewed: 3 February 2010 | All in all though, while this disc offers an extremely faithful presentation, I don’t believe it’s perfect either. I don’t think it’s the fault of the encode, mind you, but at the same time the level of clarity isn’t quite up to par with the best Blu-rays on the market. Nonetheless, fans of the film will be MORE than pleased with what they’re given. (Read Full Review)

Reviewer: DVD Talk | Overall | Movie | HD Video | HD Audio | Date Reviewed: 17 January 2010 | In 1961, Pauline Kael wrote of The Seven Samurai: "Here is the problem of men's action pictures: either we get the ritual conflict of slick bad men versus strong silent heroes, i.e., evil pitted against good in a frame of reference too silly to take seriously, or we get the ritual conflict set in the commonplaces of a shopworn, socially conscious frame of reference which tries to give depth and meaning to the ritual and succeeds only in destroying its beautiful simplicity. The Seven Samurai triumphs over those problems by pouring all its energies into the extremities of human experience--into conflict itself--but it still looks for social 'truths' beyond the action and provides an explicit content so banal that the epic beauties seem to be a virtuoso exercise. Perhaps Kurosawa, like his obsessive master swordsman, has no thoughts beyond the perfection of his craft. Action is all--the pity is that he doesn't seem to know that in The Seven Samurai it is enough." I read that review a couple of days after my first viewing of The Hurt Locker, and was struck by how heartily it applies to Bigelow's near-masterpiece; the picture verges on redefining the very essence of action storytelling, but shrinks away from that breakthrough ever so slightly. Bigelow feels the unnecessary need to justify and contextualize; like Kurosawa, she doesn't seem to know that--because of the skill of her shooting, and the finesse of her subtext--action is indeed enough. Reviewer: Blu-ray.com | Overall | Movie | HD Video | HD Audio | Date Reviewed: 13 January 2010 | A relentlessly terrifying experience that's more than the sum of the shots fired or the bombs disarmed, Director Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker is a picture that's true to the horrors of War -- particularly the psychological anguish incurred even in place of physical harm -- and not the run-and-gun action normally associated with lesser-in-meaning War movies. With a strong cast; exceptional direction and cinematography; and a moving, often gut-wrenching thematic overtone that analyzes the fragility of the human condition through the prism of the uncertainty of war, The Hurt Locker sets a new standard for genre excellence and has solidified itself as a contemporary War movie classic. Summit's Blu-ray release delivers where it counts, exhibiting reference-grade video and audio presentations. A decent but ultimately underwhelming supplements package should not interfere with the decision to add this otherwise exceptional film and fantastic disc to any Blu-ray collection. The Hurt Locker comes highly recommended. (Read Full Review)

Reviewer: DoBlu.com | Movie | HD Video | HD Audio | Date Reviewed: 12 January 2010 | Hurt Locker does not contain a central story. The audience never learns the identity of the bombers, their motivations, or reasons (not that the latter is already known given the setting). The script is concerned solely with character, the core being loose cannon SSgt. William James (Jeremy Renner). His carefree attitude terrifies his squad mates. (Read Full Review)

Reviewer: DVD Verdict | Overall | Movie | HD Video | HD Audio | Date Reviewed: 12 January 2010 | It may or may not be the best movie about the war in Iraq, but The Hurt Locker is surely the most intense depiction of what it feels like to be on the ground in that quagmire. For my money, it's the best action movie of 2009 and this Blu-ray release does a great job of bringing the riveting tension of that experience home. (Read Full Review)

Reviewer: High-Def Digest | Overall | Movie | HD Video | HD Audio | Date Reviewed: 10 January 2010 | Hands down, this is one of 2010's first must own Blu-ray releases. The movie is an absolute, pulse-quickening masterpiece, the disc's audio and video are staggering and the extra features, while not voluminous (it leads me to believe, should the movie get the Academy Awards appreciation that's predicted, we'll see another, fancier version down the line), are really wonderful just the same. This is one disc that deserves to be in everyone's collection. (Read Full Review)
