Date Reviewed: 29 September 2009 | Braveheart is the strongest Sapphire Series release thus far but still comes up a little short compared to more robust offers from other studios who poured more resources into next-generation features and functionality. Imperfection aside, the improved audio, video and handful of new HD and interactive bonus features make Braveheart on Blu-ray worth a double dip for owners of the DVD and a no-brainer purchase for anyone else. Date Reviewed: 14 September 2009 | Having been MIA since 2004, it's disheartening that Mel Gibson's most recent return to prominence was once again as a TMZ whipping boy. The supposedly devoted father of several and longtime married man gave up his good Catholic values, divorced his wife, and knocked up a skeazy Russian musician, all in the name of what appears to be the standard middle aged male menopause. If his motive was to make a new name for himself, "joke" probably wasn't part of the proposed monikers. Still, with several new films in the works and an apparent clean break from his past life, Gibson may be ripe for a revival. While five years is forever in Hollywood, the talent he showed in Braveheart (and his two other films since then) argues for someone who will always have a place at the Tinseltown trough. It may not always be a front row seat, but as this amazing movie illustrates, his is a moviemaking skill set that just can't be ignored. (Read Full Review)

Date Reviewed: 11 September 2009 | Without question, Braveheart is an epic masterwork from the directorial eye of Mel Gibson. Great characters, fantastic visuals, and a hearty, poignant story make the tale of William Wallace worth revisiting time after time. Braveheart , in itself, is nothing short of a magnificently enjoyable slice of brutal splendor that comes with ridiculously high recommendations. Bar none, Paramount's Sapphire Series Blu-ray presentation of Mel Gibson's film is one of the best discs available on the market. Sure, it sounds extremely strong and carries dynamic supplements both old and new, but this 1080p transfer is really something to see for all home theater enthusiasts. It's a striking high-definition rendering of an endearing, sublime picture that easily earns DVDTalk's Collector Series marker. Bravo! (Read Full Review)

Date Reviewed: 9 September 2009 | The movie is generally highly acclaimed, with good reason; great performances, nice production efforts in the period setting, and a great layout of the story of the myths/history surrounding the heroic protagonist. Though, the film has definitely been poked at about its historical inaccuracies, to which you have to wonder why critics would even bother with that, being that Hollywood would only fictionalizes history all of the time. The main point lying within this film that must have won so many audiences over is the undying theme of believing in and fighting for what is right, which is thoroughly conveyed in this story; whether historians like it or not. Overall, it has been and will continue to be a worthy and notable film, earning a “4.5 Star Rating“. (Read Full Review)

Date Reviewed: 5 September 2009 | It isn't easy making epics. Often, the surrounding material can overwhelm the characters. Just ask Kevin Costner, whose "Waterworld" and "Postman" looked so bloated with peripheral matter we hardly noticed the main character. But Gibson manages to keep "Braveheart" afloat by solidly grounding Wallace in the viewer's mind and heart. The actor's general amiability makes Wallace a more personable and likable character than those in most in such epics. The battle scenes are probably what audiences will recollect most, yet Wallace himself comes over almost as strongly as any of the combat. The only substantial equivalent is Kirk Douglas in "Spartacus," another epic where the main character remains firmly rooted in memory despite the spectacle. "Braveheart" is deserving of its popularity, praise, and awards. It's a big, old-fashioned, grand-scale blockbuster adventure, made all the better in Blu-ray high definition. (Read Full Review)

Date Reviewed: 4 September 2009 | Randall Wallace’s script is fantastic, if not always historically accurate. Braveheart is filled with characters, yet never confusing even in the midst of the impressively staged battles. Scale is immense, the type that is conveyed when no expense is spared to bring a vision to the screen. It is pure Hollywood excess, but in a way that is necessary, not overbearing. Date Reviewed: 1 September 2009 | The winner of five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director and boasting an Oscar-nominated score from the legendary James Horner that's at once traditional, bold, and tender, Braveheart is a bona-fide classic that may not be the most historically accurate picture but is certainly one of cinema's most fundamentally sound from the top down. With pitch-perfect pacing, fabulous acting, well-written characters, exciting action sequences, and an unwavering emotional core, Braveheart may be found on a rather short list amongst the best of the best films in cinema history. Parmaount's Blu-ray and flagship "Sapphire Series" release is, in a word, superb. Boasting a high quality film-like 1080p transfer, a wondrous lossless soundtrack, and plenty of extras, Braveheart is one of the year's must-own titles and earns my highest recommendation.
